Listing of generics arm seen as trigger

The stock of Glenmark Pharma has risen almost three per cent to Rs 280 over the last one week on news of tie-ups with Sanofi-Aventis, Par Pharmaceuticals and Taro Pharmaceuticals. While the company has entered a drug development programme with Sanofi, its licensing agreements with the other two will enable it to sell key drugs in the US.

Sanofi development deal
The agreement with Sanofi-Aventis grants the French major a licence to develop and market Glenmark’s research molecule, or compound, to treat chronic pain. The compound, called GRC 15300, is in the first phase of clinical trials and is for treatment of osteoarthritis and neuropathic pain. Peak sales in this area of pain management in the US are estimated at $3 billion. While Glenmark gets an upfront payment of $20 million (Rs 90 crore), it will receive $325 million (Rs 1,462 crore) if the molecule advances through the three research phases and is commercialised. Though the milestone payment is large, it is linked to targets and may not come through if results of future clinical trials are unsatisfactory.

The company announced in August last year that a compound, Oglemilast, used to treat lung disease, failed the tests. While the potential revenue from the successful launch of the product was pegged at Rs 900 crore, the company received only Rs 158 crore before its partner, Forest Labs, stopped research. The stock had lost 13 per cent then and touched a low of Rs 202.
Licensing agreements
Glenmark Pharma’s generics subsidiary, Glenmark Generics, entered into an exclusive licensing arrangement with Par Pharmaceutical for Ezetimibe, the generic version of Merck Schering-Plough’s Zetia. This cholesterol-modifying agent has annual US sales of $1.4 billion. Glenmark has a first-to-file status for this product, which means it will be the only company to market the drug, besides the innovator. While Glenmark gets a payment and a share in profits for granting the rights to Par, the two will share the costs of the patent litigation case. The tie-up will help Glenmark save on distribution costs and spread risk on the legal cost front. The company received tentative approval in April last year and the 30-month expiry of the stay on the final approval ends in October this year. The approval is likely to be based on the outcome of the case which is currently on in US courts. Glenmark Generics has also tied up with Taro Pharmaceuticals under which it will manufacture and supply a branded product to Taro.

Investment rationale
While these marketing tie-ups and the development deal are positives for Glenmark Pharma given the disappointment on Oglemilast last year, the gains from them are limited in the short term. What the market awaits is listing of Glenmark Generics, which will help the company bring down its debt of about Rs 1,500 crore and the debt to equity ratio to just under one (from 1.3 in 2008-09). At Rs 278, the stock is quoting at a reasonable 14.6 times its 2010-11 estimated earning per share of Rs 19, and can be considered for investment.

hekla volcano

Previously known as the “Gateway to Hell,” a highly active volcano located near the recent Eyjafjallajokull eruption is being monitored by scientists who are concerned that the Earth’s crust may deliver more activity in the area.

The Hekla volcano last erupted in 2000 and other recent eruptions were in 1991 and 1980. So it is only logical that people are becoming concerned with the Hekla Volcano after the recent Eyjafjallajokull eruptions that have affected all of Iceland and most of Europe.

One of its biggest eruptions ever of Hekla was in 1300, when the mountain split apart. At the time, “plume and ashes created such darkness there, that no one dared to go fishing. Farms collapsed during the earthquakes and the following famine demanded many human lives,” says the Nordic Adventure Travel Web site. That eruption lasted an entire year.

It seems recent activity on Twitter regarding an MSNBC news posting has led to some confusion about Hekla’s activity or lack thereof. With travel in Europe being turned upside down by a looming ash cloud many people were concerned that things were only getting worse.

Online food programs can improve eating habits

Online programs focusing on the benefits of fruits and vegetables can inspire people to eat healthy, a new study claims.

After a 12-month long study, researchers at Henry Ford Hospital insist providing information and tips about fruits and vegetables may be the key to getting more people to eat healthier.

As part of the study, the experts recruited members of Health Alliance Plan and four other HMOs in Seattle, Denver, Minneapolis and Atlanta, ages 21 to 65.

The participants were divided in to three groups.

A control online program that provided general information for the participants about improving their fruit and vegetable intake.

A program that was similar but personalized to the individual’s needs

And, a program that incorporated the other two components and was also supplemented with motivational interviewing counseling via e-mail.

The program included a total of four sessions.

These sessions included four to five pages of core content, illustrations and optional links to more detailed information and special features designed to supplement session content, with special features illustrated serving sizes and nutritional similarities of fresh versus frozen versus canned foods.

Apart from information on 300 fruit and vegetable-based recipes, the participant could also access short video and audio files.

At the end of the study, researchers noted improvement across all study groups, but the most significant changes were observed in the group that had motivational interviewing and counseling.

Study co-author, Gwen Alexander, PhD, assistant research scientist, said: “We found that giving participants gentle reminders that refocused them on their goals greatly improved progress. They were being held accountable for their progress, which became a key motivator.”

Also, Study senior author Christine Cole Johnson, Ph.D., M.P.H., chair of Henry Ford’s Department of Biostatistics and Research Epidemiologym, added:

“People already know the health benefits of fruits and vegetables, but they often don’t know how to incorporate them into their diet.

“That’s why our study worked. Using online programs, we were able to offer study participants practical and easy tips to increase their daily fruit and vegetable intake.”

The study has been published in this month’s issue of the American Journal of Public Health.

Open System Interconnection(OSI)

The protocol architecture would then form the framework for standardization. OSI stands for open system interconnection reference model developed by ISO.

The task of OSI was to define a set of layers and the services provided by each layer. Each system consists of seven layers as follows,

Application layer :

It provides access to OSI environment for users and slo provides distributed information services.

Presentation layer :

It provides independence to the application processes from difference in data representation.

Session layer :

It provides control structure for communication between application, etablishes , manager and terminates connection between cooperating application.

Transport layer:

It provides reliable, transparent transfer of data between end points, provides end to end error recovery and flow control.

Network Layer :

It provides upper layers with independence from the data transmission and switching technologies used to connect systems.

Data Link Layer :

It provides for reliable transfer of information across physical link; sends block with the necessary synchronization error control and flow control.

Physical layer :

Concerned with transmission of unstructured bit stream over physical medium deals with mechanical, electrical, functional and procedural characteristics to access the physical medium.

How Broadband services different from traditional dial-up services

Traditional dial-up Internet services are sometimes referred to as “dial-on-demand” services. That is, your computer only connects to the Internet when it has something to send, such as email or a request to load a web page. Once there is no more data to be sent, or after a certain amount of idle time, the computer disconnects the call. Also, in most cases each call connects to a pool of modems at the ISP, and since the modem IP addresses are dynamically assigned, your computer is usually assigned a different IP address on each call. As a result, it is more difficult (not impossible, just difficult) for an attacker to take advantage of vulnerable network services to take control of your computer.

Broadband services are referred to as “always-on” services because there is no call setup when your computer has something to send. The computer is always on the network, ready to send or receive data through its network interface card (NIC). Since the connection is always up, your computer’s IP address will change less frequently (if at all), thus making it more of a fixed target for attack.

What’s more, many broadband service providers use well-known IP addresses for home users. So while an attacker may not be able to single out your specific computer as belonging to you, they may at least be able to know that your service providers’ broadband customers are within a certain address range, thereby making your computer a more likely target than it might have been otherwise.

MIME and Its Applications

MIME stands for Multipurpose Internet mail extension used in RFC 2045. It is a open standard for sending multipart, multimedia through internet email. It can be send either binary, multiple ASCII or non ASCII characters sets.It also supports almost a hundred predefined types of content.

Types of content are classified into two levels

type  ->what kind of data is contained(picture, text, movie)

subtype -> specific type of data(html, plain, GIF,JPEG)

Applications:

  • The data returned by an HTTP1.0 or 1.1 web browser is sent in MIME format.
  • MIME is also used for posting forms to web servers, a  common way for an applet to communicate with the server.
  • Java relies on MIME types to pick the appropriate content handler for a particular stream of data.

Multimedia Formats

Multimedia elements (like sounds or videos) are stored in media files.

The most common way to discover the media type is to look at the file extension.

When a browser sees the file extensions .htm or .html, it will assume that the file is an HTML page. The .xml extension indicates an XML file, and the .css extension indicates a style sheet.

Picture formats are recognized by extensions like .gif and .jpg.

Multimedia elements also have their own file formats with different extensions.

You will learn more about media file extensions in the next chapters.
