women reservation bill

Mayawati, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president opposed the women’s reservation bill which is supposed to be brought out in Rajya Sabha Monday.

She sent a letter to Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister saying that her party will not accept the bill until the bill is modified according to the changes suggested by her. Mulayam Singh Yadav, Samajwadi Party chief also raised similar issues.

Satish Chandra Misra, BSP general secretary also held a press conference in order to raise the party’s opposition against the bill.

According to Mayawati, the bill is against wellbeing of “Dalits, minorities and backwards.”

Satish Chandra Misra said, “The bill is not acceptable to us in the form it was tabled in the parliament,” “What they need to do is to ensure that the proposed 33 percent reservation for women is granted over and above the existing reservation for Dalits and OBCs (other backward classes).”

According to Mishra, the President of BSP has requested the prime minister that the bill should not only benefit the scheduled castes and OBC women, “but also to the ones from minority and the poor among upper castes.”

Misra added,”She has made it very clear that BSP would not support the bill without the suggested changes.”

Today International Women’s Day examines the struggles and triumphs of women all over the globe as they strive for political and social awareness.

The first International Women’s Day was celebrated on February 28, 1909 in the United States. In 1910, the first international women’s conference was held in Copenhagen. International Women’s Day was marked by over a million in 1911 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Denmark. On March 25, 1911, a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory killed more than 140 workers fueling the celebration of International Women’s Day.

International Women’s Day dwindled in the 1930s until the 1960s with the rise of feminism. In 1965, International Women’s Day became a non-working holiday in the Soviet Union.

There are a few cool customs throughout the world on International Women’s Day. In Italy, men give women yellow mimosas. This is also a tradition in Albania and Russia, where chocolate is another popular gift. In Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Macedonia, Lithuania, Brazil, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Serbia, Poland and Bulgaria, women are given flowers and sometimes get goodies from employers, too.

Are digital marketing courses helping the Indian online industry?

The growth of digital media in India has led to the need for trained professionals who could not only understand the nitty-gritty of digital marketing but also execute critical campaigns for clients on the internet. To cater to this growing need and also to help the professionals already working in the industry to keep up with the growing horizon of digital marketing, the industry body Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and a number of organisations have started providing training programmes and certificate courses on digital media.

AlooTechie spoke to some of the course providers to understand their objectives of providing digital marketing training programmes in India and why do they think their students will gain an upper hand in digital marketing after taking these courses. We also caught up with some of the digital agencies to know what they think about these programmes and whether they have benefitted from these courses.

Mahesh Murthy, founder and chief executive officer, Pinstorm, a Mumbai-based digital marketing agency that also runs Digital Marketing Institute, said, “We know digital marketing will explode in India — not just because Indian marketers are taking to it but because overseas marketers will increasingly use Indian firms to deliver these services. And, guess what, no one here has learnt how to do digital marketing. So, who will staff the agencies and the clients if no one is trained?”

According to Murthy, the digital industry needs people who can understand social media, digital brand strategy, search marketing, search optimisation, impression-based media plans and more. “We looked around to see if any industry body was doing this and we got the support of IAMAI to offer our first courses. We need to create the industry from the ground up and you can’t do that without training,” he added.

Online food programs can improve eating habits

Online programs focusing on the benefits of fruits and vegetables can inspire people to eat healthy, a new study claims.

After a 12-month long study, researchers at Henry Ford Hospital insist providing information and tips about fruits and vegetables may be the key to getting more people to eat healthier.

As part of the study, the experts recruited members of Health Alliance Plan and four other HMOs in Seattle, Denver, Minneapolis and Atlanta, ages 21 to 65.

The participants were divided in to three groups.

A control online program that provided general information for the participants about improving their fruit and vegetable intake.

A program that was similar but personalized to the individual’s needs

And, a program that incorporated the other two components and was also supplemented with motivational interviewing counseling via e-mail.

The program included a total of four sessions.

These sessions included four to five pages of core content, illustrations and optional links to more detailed information and special features designed to supplement session content, with special features illustrated serving sizes and nutritional similarities of fresh versus frozen versus canned foods.

Apart from information on 300 fruit and vegetable-based recipes, the participant could also access short video and audio files.

At the end of the study, researchers noted improvement across all study groups, but the most significant changes were observed in the group that had motivational interviewing and counseling.

Study co-author, Gwen Alexander, PhD, assistant research scientist, said: “We found that giving participants gentle reminders that refocused them on their goals greatly improved progress. They were being held accountable for their progress, which became a key motivator.”

Also, Study senior author Christine Cole Johnson, Ph.D., M.P.H., chair of Henry Ford’s Department of Biostatistics and Research Epidemiologym, added:

“People already know the health benefits of fruits and vegetables, but they often don’t know how to incorporate them into their diet.

“That’s why our study worked. Using online programs, we were able to offer study participants practical and easy tips to increase their daily fruit and vegetable intake.”

The study has been published in this month’s issue of the American Journal of Public Health.

How Broadband services different from traditional dial-up services

Traditional dial-up Internet services are sometimes referred to as “dial-on-demand” services. That is, your computer only connects to the Internet when it has something to send, such as email or a request to load a web page. Once there is no more data to be sent, or after a certain amount of idle time, the computer disconnects the call. Also, in most cases each call connects to a pool of modems at the ISP, and since the modem IP addresses are dynamically assigned, your computer is usually assigned a different IP address on each call. As a result, it is more difficult (not impossible, just difficult) for an attacker to take advantage of vulnerable network services to take control of your computer.

Broadband services are referred to as “always-on” services because there is no call setup when your computer has something to send. The computer is always on the network, ready to send or receive data through its network interface card (NIC). Since the connection is always up, your computer’s IP address will change less frequently (if at all), thus making it more of a fixed target for attack.

What’s more, many broadband service providers use well-known IP addresses for home users. So while an attacker may not be able to single out your specific computer as belonging to you, they may at least be able to know that your service providers’ broadband customers are within a certain address range, thereby making your computer a more likely target than it might have been otherwise.

The Basics of and Techniques for Horizontal Navigation with HTML List Items and CSS

Inline elements and padding :

“Have you ever tried to add padding toelements that have been set to ‘display: inline’? Did you find that the padding seemed to be rendering in an unusual way? … To understand why this is happening, we need to look at the different ways that block level and inline elements treat properties such as width, height, padding and margins.” For example, the W3C states that the width, height properties do not apply to inline, non-replaced elements, but line-heightdoes apply to the height of the box. Read Russ Weakley’s presentation to understand more of what does and doesn’t apply and how you can achieve the results you need for your inline list navigation or other inline elements. Fabulous presentation that explains things in an easy-to-understand way.

Turning a list into a navigation bar :

  • Fabulous tutorial with easy-to-understand instructions and packed with code samples all along the way explaining how to create a horizontal navigation bar using CSS and HTML unordered list item elements, CSS floats, and much more. Explains all the basics but also adds nice touches such as transforming the text to uppercase, adding a drop shadow using CSS, more. Great tips here.
