Apple’s latest mobile device was put up for pre-sale on Apple’s Online Store. But as was rumored, it’s only available for pre-order in black. As the store notes, “White iPhone currently unavailable for pre-order or in-store pickup.” They don’t give an estimate as to when the white one will be available, but it will undoubtedly be at some point this Summer.

Meanwhile, if you want the black one, you can pre-order it now. As expected, it’s $199 for the 16 GB version, and $299 for the 32 GB version (assuming you sign a new two-year contract with AT&T for each). The phones will be delivered on June 24, or available for in-store pick-up if you choose that option.

You can also pick up the last-generation iPhone 3GS (8 GB) for $99 now — it too will be available in stores on June 24.

Jimmy Dean, a country music legend for his smash hit about a workingman hero, “Big Bad John,” and an entrepreneur known for his sausage brand, died on Sunday. He was 81.

His wife, Donna Meade Dean, said her husband died at their Henrico County, Va., home.

She told The Associated Press that he had some health problems but was still functioning well, so his death came as a shock. She said he was eating in front of the television. She left the room for a time and came back and he was unresponsive. She said he was pronounced dead at 7:54 p.m.

“He was amazing,” she said. “He had a lot of talents.”

Born in 1928, Dean was raised in poverty in Plainview, Texas, and dropped out of high school after the ninth grade. He went on to a successful entertainment career in the 1950s and ’60s that included the nationally televised “The Jimmy Dean Show.”

In 1969, Dean went into the sausage business, starting the Jimmy Dean Meat Co. in his hometown. He sold the company to Sara Lee Corp. in 1984.

Dean lived in semiretirement with his wife, who is a songwriter and recording artist, on their 200-acre estate just outside Richmond, where he enjoyed investing, boating and watching the sun set over the James River.

In 2009 a fire gutted their home, but his Grammy for “Big Bad John,” a puppet made by Muppets creator Jim Henson, a clock that had belonged to Prince Charles and Princess Diana and other valuables were saved. Lost were a collection of celebrity-autographed books, posters of Dean with Elvis Presley and other prized possessions.

Green Day and the director of Broadway’s Spring Awakening are set to debut a musical based on the band’s 2004 punk epic American Idiot this autumn, the New York Times reports. “It doesn’t make a lot of sense,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told the NYT, “but that’s what I love about it. When people see it, it’s going to be my wildest dream.” The American Idiot musical will premiere September 4th at California’s Berkeley Repertory Theatre and run through October 11th.

Rock music has been an inspiration for Broadway-style musicals recently: U2 are working on music for a Spider-Man stage play, and Michael Jackson’s Thriller will hit Broadway as a full-on musical. It was perhaps the Tony Award-winning success of the rocking Spring Awakening — and the past triumphs of the Who’s Tommy musical — that opened the theatrical door for productions like an American Idiot musical. Green Day’s album inspired Spring Awakening director Michael Mayer during the making of his musical, and he and producer Tom Hulce approached the band about the possibility of a stage play.

According to the Times, the American Idiot musical was quietly workshopped twice in 2008 in New York City to work out the orchestration and choreography, with the band ultimately giving the production the thumbs up. As for the plot, Armstrong admits, “It’s not the most linear story in the world,” but American Idiot’s characters Jesus of Suburbia, St. Jimmy and Whatshername will likely be the main characters. While no plans are set, Mayer envisions the production will eventually come to Broadway.

The NYT article also briefly mentions the Berkeley Repertory will also host an upcoming musical based on Matthew Sweet’s Girlfriend album. Today, South Africa and Mexico kick off a month-long quest for the coveted World Cup trophy. It is a World Cup of some firsts, the most important of which is that this is the first time the world’s most popular tournament will be held on African soil. It is also the first time that Serbia and Slovakia, countries divided after the fall of communism, have advanced to the finals.

To celebrate the tournament, Britannica has published “World Cup 2010: Football in the Rainbow Nation,” which provides a unique presentation of the intersection of sport and South Africa. It provides the usual insights into the tournament–the national teams competing in this year’s event and their World Cup history, the stadiums that will host the World Cup, the group schedule, and some of the players who will be gunning to win the Golden Ball as the tournament’s MVP (as well as past legends of the game).

But, this tournament is about more than sport–and so is our feature. It would be an understatement to say that this tournament is historic. It comes 16 years after Nelson Mandela took office after decades of apartheid. Though sport has sometimes been the cause of war and bloodshed (remember the 1969 “Soccer War” between El Salvador and Honduras after World Cup qualifying matches–though the real cause was not football), it also has stopped wars (at least temporarily) and unified (even if for a brief time) divided peoples–think of the Olympic Truce or, more recently, Sunni and Shi’a celebrating Iraq’s victory in the Asian Cup a few years ago.

For South Africa, this tournament will showcase how far the country has come (and, perhaps, how far it still has to go). It comes 15 years after South Africa hosted the Rugby World Cup in its international sporting coming out party, an event replete with a Springbok win and the iconic picture of Mandela celebrating the win with François Pienaar. Prior to that tournament, there were questions about racial reconciliation and South Africa’s transition from apartheid to multiracial democracy, but that handshake, the predominantly white audience chanting “Nelson, Nelson, Nelson” at that finale, and Pienaar’s comment that “we didn’t have 60,000 South Africans [on our side], we had 43 million South Africans” symbolized how far and how peacefully South Africa had transformed itself.

Today Google has surprised users with a radical change in its homepage with the new Google backgrounds. Google background image has broken the sobriety of the search engine in the style of the Microsoft Bing browser.
The traditional white background of Google has changed with a colorful full screen image, however, the Google logo appears completely white, not in the usual colors. Users with a Google account can change the background on the homepage with their own images or with the ones that Google offers. However, unregistered users have to view the image continuously.

To change Google theme you just have to click on the ‘Change background image’ button on the bottom left corner of the page. After clicking this link a window appears where you can select the desired background.
